The future of literary festivals in Ireland

August 21, 2009 By: Paul O'Mahony Category: preparations

Make no mistake about it, there are people in high places planning to cut public funding for literary festivals.

It’s an issue we have no interest in ignoring. All of us who’ve enjoyed Listowel Writers’ Week better not take it forgranted that LWW2010 will go ahead as before.

It may. I don’t know anything about the financing of LWW09, so I have no idea how dependent it was on public funding.

Right now there are plans to cut everything. If you have any influence, I hope you are using it to ensure LWW10, the 40th, will be the best ever.

The sponsors are on the back of the program annually. Have a look inside the back cover is you have a copy still.

    Hi Paul,

Just to wish you and yours a Happy and Peaceful Christmas, and a healthy, prosperous, and creative New Year.

Hope to see you in 2010.

    Best wishes,

  3. Fintan,
Forgive me please. Your lovely message got lost in the pile of Spam that landed on the defenceless blog ages ago. Only now in May do I read you.

Yes to meeting you in Listowel. Yes to enjoying time together. May I invite you to join us in another way: we need content for this blog. Our ambition is no less than the creation of the best ever blog of a literature festival anywhere in the world – however that might be measured.

We need contributors. Broad church – a collection of disparate individuals doing their own thing for a common cause. You would have full creative licence to offer your mark here and reach out to audiences all over the world.

In a nutshell, Patrick Stack, Jeremy Gould & I can’t do it again in the same way. We must beg, borrow or steal the creativity and engagement of others. We would love to have you as a regular contributor – in the run-up to the festival, during it, and afterwards too.

Any chance you’d join us, please?
