Colm Toibin @ Listowel Writers’ Week 2009

August 01, 2009 By: Paul O'Mahony Category: connections, organisers, participants, photographs

I took this photograph in Listowel Arms Hotel on the first day of Writers’ Week 2009.

Shortly after I introduced myself to Colm and told him about the blog. He said he’d be happy to be interviewed later.

However, in the fire of the festival, I never got back to him – so I’m left with “the one that got away”.

Please boycott Listowel as a protest to the disgraceful way that woman was treated this week

  3. Tony,
I missed your comment until today. Bloody spam buried your provocative suggestion. I sympathise with you. From what I know, what happened in Listowel was disgraceful. I don’t want to prop up that sort of culture.

But time has passed since December. I don’t know what’s happened locally and whether there has been any healing or realisation by the people involved.

Right now I want to celebrate Listowel Writers’ Week as an experience that’s worth sharing with the wider world. Now I want to focus on the great side of Listowel – the extraordinary of a small Irish Kerry town making such a great event happen for 40 consecutive years – and hopefully for a lot longer.

So we won’t boycott LWW10. We’ll hope it’ll be a festival in the spirit of the founders. We’ll do our best to open the experience to many who can’t be there this year, maybe never. People abroad in Ireland and the whole world who thru this blog may share some of the joy that Listowel Writers’ Week brings to life.
